Set up in 2017 Athenry Men’s Shed is one of a national movement; the ‘Irish Men’s Sheds Association’. The men’s shed movement main aim is that where all men have the opportunity to improve and maintain their health and wellbeing by being a member of a shed. One of its main aims is the psychological wellbeing of men through keeping physically, mentally and socially active. Our shed is a home from home for some members and offers social support, a sense of purpose and belonging, all of which have been shown to strengthen immune systems and improve men’s health. We undertake projects of various types based on requests from community groups and we take part in community based activities, i.e. building a float and entering the local St. Patrick’s Day parade. We take part in various courses given by agencies such as the GRETB and GRD. We have a kitted out workshop where projects are made and a poly-tunnel where vegetables are grown.
